FAQs
What is Finding Om Yoga Therapy?
Finding Om Yoga Therapy was developed and is run by Deborah Patz Clarke, PsyD, RYT, as an integrative treatment for disorders that affect the mind and body, notably eating disorders and substance abuse disorders. Finding Om Yoga Therapy uses a combination of yoga and a discussion group following class to address concerns including emotional eating, body image, dealing with stress without harming yourself, substance abuse and much more. Groups meet for an hour and a half weekly for eight weeks, with the time split between yoga asana and a seated discussion. Each eight week session has a specific focus, such as substance abuse or binge eating, allowing participants to more fully explore their issues and deepen their recovery in the company of others in similar circumstances.
Many of us use food or substances to cope with stress, overeating or using drugs or alcohol as a "reward" for having dealt with something or someone difficult-- even though we know that this so-called reward has its own punishment. Other times we use food or drugs to numb ourselves to situations we would rather not deal with. Finding Om specifically addresses these phenomena and the feelings of shame, guilt and self-hatred that many people feel as a result.
Finding Om has been clinically-proven to raise self-esteem, improve body image, lower anxiety and reduce binge episodes in people suffering from Binge Eating Disorder. This mind/body intervention, which has been featured on KRDO radio, is an evidence-based complementary and alternative approach to self-healing and self-improvment.
Who can join Finding Om Yoga Therapy groups?
Finding Om is right for anyone with an open mind, an interest in yoga and a sincere desire to change in an engaging, life-affirming way. Men and women of a variety of ages have shown significant benefit from participation in this unique program. Finding Om will positively effect you both mentally and physically. The ultimate goal of Finding Om Yoga Therapy is to give participants skills they can take with them and build upon to continue making gains indefinitely.
Do you need more information about eating disorders? Click here for a description of Binge Eating Disorder. Remember, even people who do not meet clinical criteria for an eating disorder can be deeply impacted by a negative relationship with food and their bodies. Poor body image, emotional eating and "food rules" are among the issues addressed in Finding Om Yoga Therapy eating disorder modules.
Similarly, people who do not suffer from a full-blown addiction may find their substance use has gotten out of control and is having a detrimental imact on their lives. Information on substance abuse can be found here.
Finding Om Yoga Therapy is offered at various locations around Colorado Springs. Group size is limited to 12 people for maximum therapeutic benefit. If you struggle with eating issues, substance abuse or are simply interested in this innovative mind/body therapeutic modality, please contact Debby for details about the next start date of a group appropriate for you.
How much does it cost to join Finding Om Yoga Therapy?
Finding Om Yoga Therapy consists of a one-hour yoga group class followed by a 35 minute discussion led by a registered yoga teacher and doctoral level psychotherapist. As such, it costs more than a yoga class alone but considerably less than yoga and sessions with a therapist would on their own.
Programs meet weekly and run for 8 weeks. Sessions cost $240, or $30 per week. Early bird registration discounts are generally available.
PLEASE do not let cost be the only thing holding you back from participation. If you are concerned that this is an issue do not hesitate to ask.
