Finding Om Yoga & Therapy FAQs

What is Finding Om Yoga & Therapy?

Debby developed Finding Om Yoga & Therapy as a strength-based approach to facilitate healing in both mind and body. Often used to help those in recovery from addictive disorders and eating disorders, Finding Om Yoga Therapy uses movement and discussion to address concerns including tolerating discomfort, dealing with stress, emotional eating and body image, shame, guilt and self-hatred.

Does it work?

Yes! Finding Om Yoga Therapy is clinically-proven to raise self-esteem, lower anxiety, increase distress tolerance and reduce binge episodes. This mind-body intervention is an evidence-based complementary and alternative approach to self-healing and self-improvement. It works with and can enhance other recovery programs, including 12 Step-based programs.

I don't want to do yoga. Can I work with Debby anyway?

Of course. Debby has a vibrant private practice offered in a traditional talk therapy setting.

Why use yoga as part of therapy?

Yoga and therapy both encourage self-acceptance, setting the stage for positive change, helping people better understand themselves and begin to make realistic, lasting changes in their lives.
  • Yoga encourages people to pay attention to emotions that arise during practice and accept them as okay. Noting these emotions without labeling them “good” or “bad” can open the door to great therapeutic growth during group discussion or individual sessions.
  • Yoga increases body-awareness and promotes positive changes in how people treat their bodies. It also helps raise awareness of physical triggers that can lead to abusing food or substances.
  • People learn to stay calm in difficult moments during practice, increasing the ability to tolerate distress off the mat.
  • Yoga increases awareness of breath as an indicator of mood and teaches ways to use breath to actually change mood. Breath patterns are reflections of how we feel inside. By developing the ability to control breathing people can also control, or at least change, their moods.

I have never done yoga and am not very fit.
Will Finding Om Yoga & Therapy work for me?

Yoga is for ANY BODY! Finding Om Yoga & Therapy is right for anyone with an open mind, an interest in yoga and a sincere commitment to enhance their recovery real-time in an engaging, life-affirming way. The majority of participants in Finding Om Yoga Therapy have little to no previous yoga experience. Many have been neglecting their bodies for a number of years and are just beginning to reconnect with their physical selves. Finding Om Yoga & Therapy is designed to foster and enhance this connection. One goal is to help people learn how to treat their bodies with respect and to practice this respect both in and out of session, whether they were varsity athletes or consider a walk to the mailbox a workout. The ultimate goal of Finding Om Yoga & Therapy is to give people skills they can take with them and build upon to continue making gains indefinitely.
